HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX''s Starlink constellation has powered Africa''s first live satellite-to-mobile service, connecting everyday smartphones in some of the continent''s hardest-to-reach areas. Airtel Africa and SpaceX switched on direct-to-cell service in the Democratic Republic of Congo on August 14, making Airtel the first operator on the continent to run a commercial satellite-to-phone product on SpaceX''s network.

The launch is a commercial deployment rather than a pilot. Airtel Congo RDC activated the service in Kinshasa alongside the country''s telecoms regulator, ARPTC, opening a new front in SpaceX''s push to turn Starlink into a global mobile layer that reaches every corner of the planet from orbit.

No Dish, No Special Phone

The service works on compatible LTE Android smartphones with no dish or extra hardware. When Airtel''s ground network is out of range, devices connect directly to Starlink satellites acting as cell towers in orbit, delivering coverage wherever the sky is clear. At launch, the offering supports SMS and light-data apps such as WhatsApp messaging, with broadband and video streaming to follow as the system matures.

Eligible Airtel DRC customers with an active data bundle can register through the MyAirtel app, and the company is running a 30-day free-access period before folding satellite connectivity into select data bundles. For a nation where roughly 30 percent of the population used the internet as of 2023, and where dense forest and difficult terrain make tower construction costly, the satellite layer targets exactly the coverage gaps traditional networks struggle to fill.

A Springboard for 14 Markets

The DRC switch-on is the first market to move from agreement to full commercial operation under a broader Airtel-SpaceX partnership announced in December 2025. That deal spans Airtel''s 14 African markets and roughly 189 million subscribers, with expansion into other countries dependent on individual regulatory approvals.

The economics are compelling for both sides. Airtel gains reach into mining regions, agricultural zones, and humanitarian corridors without pouring capital into towers in low-density or high-risk areas. For SpaceX, direct-to-cell opens a mobile-spectrum revenue stream that complements its core broadband business and its growing roster of connectivity partners, from airlines rolling out Starlink Wi-Fi across their fleets to national carriers.

Building the Network in Space

The DRC model, which bundles satellite access inside an existing SIM and data plan, keeps traffic visible and manageable through local operators, an approach that may ease regulatory conversations elsewhere on the continent. Starlink''s direct-to-cell system already spans a constellation purpose-built to act as orbiting mobile towers, and each new market adds real subscriber, pricing, and churn data to a product that was speculative only a year ago.
