HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX is turning the Starlink dish into a small business opportunity. The company has opened a beta program called Starlink for Communities, which lets people who host a Starlink Kit earn money by sharing the connection with neighbors and others nearby.

The program was first spotted on a new Starlink site and then promoted by SpaceX on X on Oct. 1. Teslarati reported that hosts install one dish and router setup at a location with nearby demand, such as an apartment complex, campground, rural crossroads or event site. Nearby users then buy short-term access instead of a full individual subscription.

How It Works

According to Starlink's own page, one Starlink Kit can deliver high-speed internet to multiple users nearby. Neighbors buy an Hour Pass, Day Pass, Week Pass or Month Pass, and the host earns from every connection. Hosts can extend coverage by adding more Starlink routers or Kits as needed.

Starlink handles the heavy lifting. The company says it takes care of payments, user access and connectivity, so a host's role is mostly choosing a good location, providing power and keeping the setup running. The company says the program is open to property owners, business owners and local entrepreneurs who see demand around them.

Who Benefits

The model could be a strong fit for places where traditional broadband is thin or temporary: remote campsites, rural communities, festivals, job sites and buildings where residents want flexible access without a long contract. For visitors and neighbors, a pass priced by the hour or day may be far more appealing than committing to a monthly plan.

It also fits neatly with the momentum SpaceX has built across its network. Starlink recently topped 8 million subscribers, and the company has been widening its reach with services such as direct-to-cell coverage for everyday phones.

Getting Started

Applications for the Starlink Community beta are open now through Starlink's community host page. SpaceX has not yet published full pricing details for passes or host earnings, and as a beta, the terms may evolve as the company gathers feedback.

Even so, the idea has already drawn attention online, with SpaceX's announcement on X reaching hundreds of thousands of views. If the beta succeeds, Starlink for Communities could extend the reach of every dish in the field and bring fast satellite internet to many more people.
