Tesla Preps Cybercab Public Launch in Austin This Month

AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla''s purpose-built robotaxi is moving from the test track toward paying passengers. The company has begun preparing a public launch of the two-seat Cybercab in Austin as soon as the end of August, and it has already opened a rider lottery tied to a dedicated launch event, a strong signal that the long-awaited rollout is imminent.

A report from The Information first indicated that Tesla had started telling employees to gear up for the public debut. Shortly after, Tesla''s Robotaxi account confirmed the momentum publicly, inviting riders to take trips through August 23 for a chance to attend the Cybercab launch event, with more rides improving the odds.

A Car Built With No Steering Wheel

The Cybercab is unlike anything else in Tesla''s lineup. The two-seater has no pedals and no steering wheel, relying entirely on Tesla''s Full Self-Driving software to operate. That design makes it the first vehicle Tesla has engineered from the ground up purely for autonomy, and it will initially carry riders in Austin, where Tesla''s Robotaxi network already runs.

The vehicle has been on public roads for months as a test fleet, appearing in states including Texas, California, Nevada, Massachusetts, Illinois, New York, Washington, Florida, Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. More recently, Tesla began fitting units with an integrated Starlink antenna, adding connectivity for entertainment and constant fleet support.

Production Already Underway

Cybercab entered production at Gigafactory Texas in April, with early units serving as test mules across a range of climates and environments. Tesla has been preparing the Giga Texas line to build hundreds of units per week, and the company had already started offering employees rides earlier in the summer, an internal milestone that pointed toward a public launch before year-end.

The push also builds on Tesla''s expanding regulatory footprint for driverless service. The company recently secured its Nevada robotaxi permit for Las Vegas, one of several approvals stacking up as Tesla scales its autonomy ambitions city by city.

Why This Launch Matters

Public Cybercab rides would mark a major leap for Tesla''s self-driving program. Moving from employee trials to unsupervised rides for the general public is the kind of step that turns years of FSD development into a visible, commercial service. Tesla has iterated FSD into one of the most capable driver-assistance suites on the market, and the Cybercab is the platform designed to showcase it without a human in the loop.

No firm launch date has been set, but with the rider lottery already live and two weeks left in the month, Tesla appears intent on hitting an aggressive timeline. As first reported by Teslarati, the preparations are already in motion, and a successful Austin debut would set the stage for the Cybercab to roll into additional cities as Tesla''s robotaxi footprint grows.
