AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla has quietly cleared one of the biggest hurdles standing between its electric big rig and mainstream freight: public charging. On July 17, the company opened the world's first public Megacharger site in Bloomington, California, about an hour east of Los Angeles, and threw the doors open to every Tesla Semi customer rather than a single private fleet.

Megawatt Charging Goes Public

Until now, the earliest Semi operators leaned almost entirely on private depot hardware to keep their trucks moving. The new Bloomington hub, at 18434 Valley Blvd, changes that math. It features six individual stalls, each capable of delivering up to 1.2 megawatts — 1,200 kilowatts — of peak power to a single truck.

That is enough to let a Tesla Semi Long Range recover 60% of its 500-mile range in about 30 minutes, roughly the length of a mandated driver break. The connector itself is a chunky, square-shaped plug built to handle the Megawatt Charging System, a clear step up from the consumer NACS design that Tesla popularized alongside its rapid Supercharger expansion.

The Bloomington site actually beat an earlier planned location in Carson, California, to become the first public unit to go live, underscoring how quickly Tesla is now moving on freight infrastructure.

Built for a Growing Fleet

The timing is not an accident. Tesla is ramping Semi production at its Nevada factory to meet a steady stream of commercial orders from shipping giants like PepsiCo and specialist haulers such as WattEV and Forum Mobility, the same logistics push visible in its recent Semi pilot programs.

The Semi comes in Standard, rated at 325 miles, and Long Range, rated at 500 miles. Both variants are designed to slot into the kind of high-utilization duty cycles where downtime is the enemy, and where megawatt-class charging turns a would-be dead hour into a coffee stop.

To scale the network fast, Tesla plans to build pre-assembled, factory-ready Megachargers it can drop into place — the same playbook that carried its consumer Supercharger network past 80,000 stalls worldwide.
