AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla's energy business is scaling into one of its biggest growth engines. The company is ramping production of its next-generation Megapack 3 grid battery at a new Megafactory in Brookshire, Texas, a plant that went from groundbreaking to output in just 16 months and is designed to build 50 GWh of storage a year.

More Energy in the Same Footprint

Megapack 3 marks the biggest single jump in the product's history. Each unit holds about 5 MWh, roughly 28% more than the 3.9 MWh Megapack 2 XL, using a larger cell format that packs more capacity into the same enclosure. Tesla also cut the thermal system's connection points by 78%, which means fewer potential failure points and less labor to install and service, exactly the unglamorous gains that decide projects at grid scale. The company has been climbing this curve for years, and the Brookshire ramp gives it the capacity to keep going without straining its existing Lathrop, California and Shanghai plants.

The Megablock Changes the Math

The real breakthrough is the Megablock, which bundles up to four Megapack 3 units, about 20 MWh, with the transformer and switchgear already integrated at the factory. On older systems, that medium-voltage wiring was done in the field, one of the slowest and costliest parts of building a battery farm.

By moving that work indoors, Tesla says it can reach 248 MWh per acre and deploy a full gigawatt-hour in 20 business days, with installation running about 23% faster than before. Fewer trucks, fewer electricians and faster interconnection add up to storage that goes live sooner, precisely what utilities and hyperscale data centers are demanding.

Demand Is Outrunning Supply

Customers are lining up. Tesla recently signed a $5 billion, 25 GWh Megapack deal in Europe, and data-center operators are buying storage as fast as the company can make it. Brookshire's 50 GWh of annual capacity, all dedicated to Megapack 3, could quickly become Tesla's largest energy-storage plant.

The energy surge dovetails with a broader manufacturing push across the company, from the Nevada Semi factory's grand opening later this month to resurgent vehicle demand that saw weekly registrations in China jump 21%. Together they show a Tesla firing on multiple cylinders at once.

Grid batteries rarely stall because the cells fall short; they stall on permitting, interconnection and field wiring. By attacking those bottlenecks head-on, Tesla has turned energy storage from a side business into a scalable growth story, and Brookshire is where that story gets built.
