Tesla Model Y Tops South Korea's Car Market Again in July

AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla is back on top in South Korea. The Model Y was the single best-selling vehicle in the country in July 2026, outselling every domestic and imported rival and reaffirming the electric SUV's grip on one of Asia's most competitive auto markets.

Beating Korea's Best-Sellers

The Model Y moved 8,705 units in July, edging out the Hyundai Grandeur's 8,532 and the Kia Seltos's 7,247 to claim the No. 1 spot outright. Tesla as a brand sold 10,237 vehicles in the month, with the Model Y alone accounting for 85 percent of that total. It was the second time in 2026 the Model Y topped the monthly chart, after it led in May with 8,762 units, and it extended Tesla's streak of surpassing 10,000 monthly sales in Korea to five consecutive months.

The margins over imported competitors were even wider. BMW took second among foreign brands with 6,533 units and Mercedes-Benz third with 3,959. Remarkably, the Model Y by itself outsold GM Korea, Renault Korea and KG Mobility combined, as that trio managed just 5,080 vehicles between them. The refreshed Model Y, with its quieter cabin and longer range, has proven especially well-suited to Korean buyers who prize technology and running costs, a dynamic that has also fueled Tesla's record-setting run in China.

A Global Comeback Taking Shape

Korea's result fits a broader July rebound for Tesla. In China, the company posted its strongest month of 2026, with exports of 93,379 units and quarterly deliveries climbing to 128,394 exported alongside 126,157 sold locally. In Europe, Tesla surged in several key markets, including an 86 percent year-over-year jump in France and a 52 percent gain in Denmark, as detailed in Tesla's European sales resurgence.

The picture was not uniformly positive — registrations slipped in Norway and Sweden as those markets digested earlier pull-forward demand — but the standout wins in Korea, China, France and Denmark point to a company reasserting momentum after a bumpy start to the year.

Why Korea Matters

South Korea is a strategically important proving ground. It is home to Hyundai and Kia, two of the world's largest automakers, and a domestic market that heavily favors home-grown brands. For an imported EV to outsell every locally built model — not just other foreign cars — underscores how competitive the Model Y remains on price, technology and brand appeal.

Tesla's Korean momentum also arrives as the company sharpens its focus on affordability and software, from Full Self-Driving expansion to new financing incentives worldwide. As Drive Tesla reported, the July numbers cap a strong stretch for the Model Y abroad. With refreshed hardware rolling out and demand broadening across Asia and Europe, Tesla looks well-positioned to keep the crown in Korea heading into the second half of the year.
