AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla brought its electric Semi to the heart of Europe this week, using the press day of IAA Transportation in Hannover, Germany, to lay out the first concrete plan for selling the Class 8 truck on the continent. After years of teasing European fleets with a truck that only ran in North America, Tesla finally put hard numbers and a delivery timeline on the table.
A Truck Built for European Roads
The European-spec Semi will launch with an estimated range of 550 km, or about 342 miles, calculated at a full 40-tonne combination weight rather than a lighter test load. Tesla lists energy consumption at roughly 1.0 kWh per kilometer and a curb weight under 9,100 kg, numbers that matter to operators counting every kilogram of payload.
Charging is where the truck flexes. Tesla quotes up to 800 kW through its Megacharger network, enough to recover around 60 percent of range in about 30 minutes — roughly the length of a mandated driver break. The continental version also swaps traditional side mirrors for cameras, a change European regulations now allow, and carries a suite of exterior cameras that hint at an autonomous future.
The debut in Hannover, which runs September 15 to 20, marks the first time Tesla has shown up at the show with an actual sales roadmap rather than a concept on a stand. Production of the Semi began in earnest at Tesla's Nevada factory earlier this year, freeing the company to look east. The rollout builds on a long-running effort to scale Semi output ahead of its Nevada factory milestones.
Infrastructure Lands the Same Day
Tesla paired the reveal with an expansion of its Semi Charging for Business program into Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom, letting fleet operators buy Tesla's Megacharger and lower-cost Basecharger hardware for their own depots. Building the charging backbone alongside the truck signals that Tesla intends the European Semi to be a working product, not a show piece.
Early demand is already visible. Swedish freight-tech company Einride has agreed to take an initial 500 Tesla Semis for European deployment, giving Tesla an anchor customer as it courts logistics giants across the region. In the U.S., Tesla offers the Semi in Long Range trim rated at 500 miles and a Standard Range version at 325 miles, and the company is expected to tailor the European lineup to the continent's shorter, denser freight corridors.
Deliveries Targeted for 2027
Tesla says European customer deliveries will begin in 2027, with pricing and an order date still to come. Analysts note that Europe's high diesel costs sharpen the economic case for battery-electric trucking, and Morgan Stanley has flagged the region as a natural growth market for the Semi.
