AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla has laid out a concrete path for bringing unsupervised Full Self-Driving to customer-owned cars, telling investors it is targeting the second quarter of 2027 and that the capability will launch first inside the mapped areas where its robotaxi fleet already operates.

A Staged, Safety-First Rollout

Rather than flip a switch everywhere at once, Tesla plans to let customer cars run unsupervised within the same geofenced robotaxi zones it has validated in Austin and other launch cities. The approach lets Tesla extend hands-off driving to private owners while keeping the first deployments inside operating areas it knows intimately. It builds directly on the robotaxi program, which passed nearly 2 million cumulative unsupervised miles by the end of the third quarter, as noted in our Q3 results coverage.

The 2027 target gives Tesla time to expand its mapped zones and gather more driverless data before opening unsupervised operation more broadly.

Robotaxi as the Launchpad

Tying customer unsupervised FSD to the robotaxi footprint means the two programs now reinforce each other: every mile the fleet drives validates the same software private owners will eventually run hands-off. That strategy dovetails with Tesla's broader autonomy timeline, including its plan to put the Optimus robot into public sale by late 2027, as the company lines up its next generation of autonomous products.

Building Toward Hands-Off Driving

Setting a specific quarter for unsupervised customer operation turns a long-promised feature into a scheduled milestone. Tesla executives outlined the Q2 2027 timeline and the robotaxi-zone approach on the earnings call, as reported by Electrek.

With a date on the calendar and millions of driverless miles already banked, Tesla's march toward true hands-off driving for its customers now has a clear next step.
