Tesla Adds Vehicle-to-Load Power to Every Model Y Premium

AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla has switched on one of its most requested owner features, launching a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Outlet Adapter that lets every Model Y Premium in the United States turn its battery into a portable power source.

The accessory, which Tesla began selling on August 14, plugs into the Gen 3 Mobile Connector and exposes a standard 120-volt household outlet rated for 20 amps and up to 2.4 kilowatts of continuous output. For $80, owners can run power tools at a job site, keep laptops and lights going at a tailgate, or power a mini-fridge and string lights on a camping trip — all straight from the car. It is the same idea that makes Tesla's home energy products so popular, and it slots neatly alongside the company's recent push into affordable home backup power.

A Feature Owners Have Waited For

Until now, V2L had been reserved for the Model Y Performance and the Cybertruck. The August rollout marks the first time Tesla has extended the capability across the broader Model Y Premium lineup, covering both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the refreshed "Juniper" Model Y. Crucially, the feature is available even for cars purchased before the adapter went on sale, so existing owners are not left out.

Tesla first introduced the Outlet Adapter in China last year, where it was offered free to early Model Y L owners. Bringing it to the U.S. answers years of owner requests for a simple, sanctioned way to draw power from the vehicle without aftermarket workarounds.

What Buyers Should Know

The adapter is designed for the newer Premium trims, and Tesla notes that some earlier Long Range builds may not be compatible, so owners should confirm eligibility before ordering. The 2.4-kilowatt ceiling is enough for most consumer electronics, small appliances and tools, positioning the Model Y as a credible companion for outdoor work and recreation. The launch also arrives as Tesla keeps expanding software and hardware perks across the fleet, following updates like its 2026 summer software release.

The move underscores a broader Tesla strategy: squeezing more everyday utility out of the same battery pack that already powers the car. Bidirectional and load-sharing features turn an EV into an asset that works even when parked, a selling point rivals are racing to match.

Looking ahead, the V2L expansion sets the stage for deeper vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid capabilities that Tesla has signaled for its newer platforms. For now, Model Y Premium drivers can pick up the Outlet Adapter directly from Tesla and start powering their world from the driver's seat.
