SAN FRANCISCO — xAI offered a first look at Grok 5 on Tuesday, describing its next flagship model as a step change in memory and reasoning speed that will roll out across X, Tesla vehicles and the company's standalone apps.
The company framed Grok 5 as less about a single benchmark and more about making the assistant feel continuous and quick. A much larger context window lets the model hold long documents, codebases and conversations in view at once, while a reworked reasoning path aims to cut the lag users feel on hard questions.
What Is New In Grok 5
The headline change is memory. Grok 5 can keep far more information active in a single session, which matters for tasks like reviewing a long contract, working through a large repository, or carrying context across a multi-day project without losing the thread.
The second change is speed. xAI says Grok 5 reasons through complex problems faster than the prior generation, narrowing the gap between a quick answer and a careful one. That builds directly on the release that shipped Grok 4.6 and rolled it into Tesla vehicles, where responsiveness in the car is as important as raw capability.
xAI also pointed to broader multimodal skills, with stronger handling of images, documents and live data pulled from X. The goal, the company said, is an assistant that can see what a user sees and act on current information rather than a frozen snapshot of the world.
