AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla is giving used-car shoppers a new reason to buy directly from the automaker, launching a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program in the United States and Puerto Rico that pairs inspected, refurbished vehicles with added warranty coverage and prices starting around $20,600.

The program, which went live on August 14, upgrades Tesla's long-running used-vehicle sales with a more rigorous process. Every CPO car passes an inspection covering more than 115 points, spanning cosmetic, functional and structural components, and Tesla says it refurbishes and certifies each vehicle only after confirming it has no history of structural damage or airbag deployment. Buyers also receive a vehicle history report detailing prior ownership, title status and accident records. The move dovetails with Tesla's broader affordability push, which recently included expanded EV incentives for buyers.

Warranty Coverage Is the Big Draw

The clearest difference between Tesla's standard used inventory and the new CPO tier is protection. Certified vehicles come with a Pre-Owned Limited Vehicle Warranty covering one year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first, on top of any coverage remaining under the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Just as important for EV buyers, the eight-year Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty carries over, so eligible cars keep whatever time and mileage remain on that all-important coverage.

Perks That Sweeten the Deal

CPO buyers also get a one-month trial of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and a month of Premium Connectivity, giving newcomers a taste of Tesla's software ecosystem — and a low-risk way to sample the continually improving FSD experience. The full lineup is eligible, with certified Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck units available.

By formalizing certification, Tesla is targeting value-focused shoppers who want the confidence of a franchise-style guarantee without the price of a new car. Starting near $20,600 for the most affordable Model 3, the program pushes Tesla ownership into reach for a wider audience at a moment when the company is working to grow demand across every price tier.

The timing is notable. A certified used channel helps Tesla capture buyers stepping up from gas cars, supports resale values for existing owners, and keeps more customers inside the Tesla ecosystem across multiple vehicles and years. Interested shoppers can browse the certified inventory now through Tesla's used-vehicle listings, with more cars expected to roll into the program as it scales.
