AUSTIN, Texas — Behind Tesla's record-breaking vehicle quarter sat another number worth pausing on: the company deployed 13.5 GWh of energy storage in Q2 2026, up more than 40% from the 9.6 GWh it installed a year earlier.

It was one of the largest storage quarters in Tesla's history and a reminder that the automaker's battery business has quietly become a growth engine in its own right.

A business that keeps compounding

The 13.5 GWh figure marked a roughly 53% jump from the 8.8 GWh Tesla deployed in the first quarter and ranked as the company's second-largest storage quarter ever, trailing only the 14.2 GWh set in Q4 2025. Cumulatively, Tesla has now deployed more than 132 GWh of storage since 2016.

The growth is powered by the Megapack, Tesla's utility-scale battery, and the Powerwall for homes. Demand for both has climbed as grids worldwide race to add capacity that can soak up renewable energy and stabilize supply. Electrek noted the strong deployment alongside the record Q2 delivery report.

Higher margins, steadier demand

Energy storage carries attractive margins and a long backlog, giving Tesla a more predictable revenue stream than the cyclical auto business. That mix helped push the company past a milestone this quarter, as trailing-twelve-month revenue topped $100 billion for the first time.

Tesla's battery expertise also feeds back into its cars. The same cell chemistry advances that improve grid products show up in the vehicle fleet, where studies have highlighted the durability of Tesla's LFP battery packs.

Scaling with the grid

Tesla is expanding Megapack production, including at its dedicated Megafactories, to keep pace with utility demand that shows no sign of slowing. As data centers and electrified transport strain power grids around the world, large-scale storage has become essential infrastructure rather than a nice-to-have.

With deployments climbing more than 40% year-over-year and a manufacturing base still ramping, Tesla's energy division looks set to keep setting records. For a company best known for its cars, the battery business is increasingly one of its strongest and most durable growth stories.
