FREMONT, Calif. — Tesla is turning its factory floor into a schoolhouse for robots. On its July 22 second-quarter earnings call, the company introduced the Optimus Academy, a program that will deploy early Optimus units from Fremont to accelerate training-data collection and software development as production ramps.

The disclosure came with a concrete timeline: initial manufacturing runs of Optimus are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026 on the converted Model S and Model X line.

Building the Line, Then the Curriculum

Tesla said the freed-up space from its decommissioned flagship sedan and SUV line is being turned into a dedicated Optimus production line, with early builds feeding directly into the Academy. The idea is to put real robots to work so they can generate the high-quality, high-volume data needed to teach the next generation.

That conversion has moved with unusual speed. As Tesla showcased its Fremont Optimus line progress earlier this summer, crews dismantled the old vehicle line and installed entirely new modular equipment in roughly four months, a pace Musk called insanely fast. The site now lists Optimus alongside the Model 3 and Model Y as a core product.

How the Academy Works

Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy described a layered training approach. Human workers demonstrate tasks, a specialized team curates high-resolution examples to validate the data, and internet how-to videos supply additional context. The Optimus Academy then lets robots train more robots through reinforcement learning, creating a flywheel that speeds up as the fleet grows.

The company reiterated that Optimus uses the same end-to-end strategy as its cars, pixels in, controls out, and said the robot has dexterity at or above the level of a human hand. That vision connects directly to Tesla’s broader AI ambitions, including the massive compute buildout powering its models.

From Fremont to Texas

Tesla confirmed that a second, much larger Optimus factory is under construction at Gigafactory Texas, where a higher-volume variant is expected to be built, with the Fremont line serving as the critical proving ground. Musk once again called Optimus potentially the biggest product in Tesla history, while acknowledging it is also one of the company’s hardest engineering and AI challenges.

With production runs slated for this quarter and the Optimus Academy ready to put those first robots to work, Tesla is signaling that its humanoid program is shifting from prototypes to a real, self-improving manufacturing and training system, one it believes will define its next decade.
