SAN FRANCISCO — xAI has opened Grok's conversational Voice Mode to all users at no charge and layered in real-time, two-way spoken translation across dozens of languages, turning the assistant into a pocket interpreter that talks back in a natural voice. The update begins rolling out today on the Grok app and inside Tesla vehicles.

Talking to Grok, Hands-Free

Voice Mode lets people hold a flowing spoken conversation with Grok rather than typing, interrupting mid-sentence, changing topics, and getting answers in a lifelike voice with almost no lag. Until now the feature sat behind a subscription; xAI is making the core experience free, betting that daily spoken use is the fastest path to making Grok a habit.

The release builds on the momentum from Grok 4.6 and its rollout into Tesla vehicles, which put the assistant in front of drivers who increasingly talk to their cars instead of tapping screens. In the car, Grok can now field questions, draft messages, and translate a roadside conversation without the driver ever looking away from the road.

Live Translation in Both Directions

The headline addition is simultaneous translation. Two people who speak different languages can each talk naturally while Grok relays each sentence aloud in the other's language, handling idioms and context rather than word-for-word swaps. xAI says the system keeps each speaker's tone and intent intact, a step up from the robotic cadence of older translation tools.

The capability leans on the enterprise-grade infrastructure xAI has been standing up, including the private deployments it introduced when it opened Grok Enterprise to Fortune 500 customers. The same low-latency pipeline that serves large companies now powers consumer voice calls, which is why responses feel immediate even mid-translation.

A Bid for Everyday Utility

By pairing free voice access with translation, xAI is aiming squarely at the moments where an assistant proves its worth: a traveler ordering dinner abroad, a nurse speaking with a patient, a parent helping a child with homework out loud. Making the feature free removes the friction that kept voice a novelty.

Details on availability and supported languages are posted on xAI's official site, which the company says it will refresh as more languages and regions switch on.

xAI frames the move as part of a broader goal to make Grok the most useful assistant people reach for by default, and voice — fast, free, and multilingual — is the company's clearest push yet toward conversation as the primary interface.
