HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX rewrote its own record book on Saturday evening, launching two Falcon 9 rockets from opposite coasts just 38 minutes apart and setting a new mark for the shortest time ever recorded between two orbital flights.
The feat, achieved on Aug. 15, beat the company's previous best — two Starlink missions flown 65 minutes apart on Aug. 31, 2024 — by a full 27 minutes. It is the clearest sign yet that SpaceX has turned rapid, reliable spaceflight into something close to routine, a cadence no other launch provider on Earth can match.
Two Coasts, One Window
The first liftoff came at 9:12 p.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, carrying eight satellites to low Earth orbit for Louisiana-based telecom company Globalstar. All eight spacecraft deployed cleanly over a six-minute span beginning less than an hour after launch, continuing a Globalstar replenishment campaign that has leaned heavily on SpaceX's reliability, much like the record-setting Starlink cadence out of Florida earlier this month.
Just 38 minutes later, at 9:50 p.m. EDT, a second Falcon 9 rose from Vandenberg Space Force Base on California's central coast, kicking off a classified mission for the U.S. Space Force designated USSF-366. Rocket watchers believe the payload is a batch of national-security satellites built on SpaceX's Starshield bus, a hardened cousin of the Starlink platform.
