AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla''s largest production base has hit another milestone. Gigafactory Shanghai has produced its 6 millionth battery pack, the company announced on Chinese social platform Weibo on Tuesday, underscoring the plant''s central role in Tesla''s global manufacturing engine.
The pace is notable. Giga Shanghai reached its 5 millionth battery pack in November 2025, meaning the latest million took roughly nine months. Tesla framed the achievement around its in-house engineering, writing that "from cell chemistry to battery pack structure, we insist on in-house R&D and independent design," and adding that the packs undergo multiple rounds of stringent testing for performance, longevity, and safety.
A Plant Built for Scale
Located in Shanghai''s Lingang New Area, Giga Shanghai is Tesla''s first vehicle plant outside the United States and China''s first wholly foreign-owned automaker. Construction began in January 2019, production started by year-end, and Model 3 deliveries followed in January 2020, with the Model Y arriving a year later.
Today the factory has annual capacity of about one million vehicles, making it Tesla''s most highly utilized plant globally. In more than six years of operation it has contributed nearly half of Tesla''s worldwide EV deliveries, and its steady output continues even as the company expands demand in markets like Norway and Spain.
Exports Drive the Story
While Tesla faces stiffer domestic competition in China, the Shanghai plant has become an export powerhouse. In July, Giga Shanghai exported a record 66,330 vehicles, accounting for nearly 71 percent of its wholesale sales that month. Through the first seven months of 2026, the factory shipped 295,324 vehicles abroad, up more than 130 percent year over year and already exceeding its full-year 2025 export total.
That export strength helps keep the line humming and complements Tesla''s broader efforts to sharpen its value proposition, including new programs like its recently launched certified pre-owned initiative in the U.S. To further stimulate local demand, Tesla is also expanding its lineup: a new Model Y variant filed with Chinese regulators last week carries a 659-kilometer range and is expected to be a performance version.
Milestones Keep Stacking
The battery-pack record is the latest in a run of production landmarks for Tesla in China. Giga Shanghai turned out its 10 millionth electric drive system in August 2024, and the 4 millionth China-made Tesla rolled off the line in December 2025. At the end of July, Tesla announced it had built its 10 millionth EV globally.
Notably, Tesla does not manufacture battery cells itself in China, sourcing them from CATL and LG Energy Solution while handling pack design and assembly in-house. As CnEVPost reported, the milestone reflects the plant''s manufacturing stability, a foundation Tesla is leaning on as it scales exports and readies fresh product for a competitive market.
