AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla has widened the map for its driverless Robotaxi service in Austin, growing the operational geofence to roughly 288 square miles in the first such expansion in about ten months. The updated boundary is approximately 9 percent larger than before, adding around 24 square miles of new coverage to a zone that previously spanned about 264 square miles.
A Bigger Footprint For Driverless Rides
The expansion pushes the service area northward toward Pflugerville along the U.S. 183 corridor and folds in neighborhoods north of the Domain as well as districts such as Mesa Park. Many of these are higher-end residential and commercial areas that had been sitting just outside the permitted operating zone.
Riders can now request fully unsupervised trips that start or end in the newly added locations, provided the entire route stays inside the digital boundary. The move comes days after Tesla opened public Cybercab rides in Austin, underscoring how quickly the company is scaling its home-market network.
Measured, Data-Driven Growth
Tesla launched public Robotaxi operations in Austin in mid-2025 with a modest zone of roughly 20 square miles, then steadily enlarged the map through 2025 and early 2026 before holding it steady to gather miles and refine its Full Self-Driving stack. The latest expansion was confirmed by Tesla watchers and reported by Teslarati, which noted the boundary now covers much of the metro.
After the last major update roughly ten months earlier, Tesla deliberately paused expansion while it validated performance and merged improvements into its neural-network driving software. Engineers have argued that camera-based, end-to-end AI — rather than additional sensors — is the key to scaling autonomy safely, and the steady accumulation of incident-free miles has strengthened that case. Even a 9 percent bump matters: longer trips become possible, more residents gain access, and the fleet collects more diverse real-world data across new road types and traffic patterns.
One Of The Largest Driverless Zones In The U.S.
At 288 square miles, Austin now offers one of the biggest driverless ride-hailing service areas anywhere in the country. Tesla has continued to prioritize safety and software readiness over rapid geographic sprawl, operating a deliberately small unsupervised fleet as it builds confidence. That caution has paid off; the company recently reported its Robotaxi program passed one million unsupervised miles without a driver behind the wheel.
The added territory also aligns with existing Tesla infrastructure, which could support more efficient vehicle staging in the north end of the city. For riders, the practical effect is immediate: more pickup and drop-off points, more usable routes, and a service that increasingly behaves like a citywide utility rather than a pilot.
With the Cybercab now carrying paying passengers and the geofence expanding again, Tesla appears poised to accelerate coverage in the months ahead — bringing autonomous, affordable transportation to an ever-larger share of Austin residents as additional Cybercabs join the fleet.
